🌐 What You Can Do with the Workshop

With the Steam Workshop, you can publish lines you made in the map editor to other players, and subscribe to and play lines others have published.

  • Find and subscribe — Find published maps from within the game; when you subscribe, they download automatically.
  • Play — Subscribed maps appear in line selection, where you can play them in Sandbox or make your own timetables.
  • Publish — Publish a map you made, together with the timetables made on it.
Where do I start? To find maps, use "+ Find Maps on the Workshop..." in the line selection of "Sandbox" or "Timetable Builder" on the title screen. Publishing is done from the map editor screen (Publishing Your Map).
To use the Workshop, Steam must be running and you must be logged in.

🔍 Finding and Subscribing to Maps

  1. Open title → "Sandbox" (or "Timetable Builder") → line selection.
  2. Choose "+ Find Maps on the Workshop..." below the list.
  3. In "All Items", find maps using search, tags, and sorting.
  4. Press "Subscribe" on a map you're interested in. The status changes from "Downloading..." to "Subscribed (downloaded)".
  5. Go back to line selection with "Close" (Esc), and the subscribed map appears in the list.
The first time you subscribe, a notice appears once. Authors may update Workshop maps later, and when a map is updated, your own timetables made on that map may become unplayable (When an Author Updates a Map). Subscribe only if you agree.

Tabs and Sorting

  • All Items — Published maps. You can use search, tag filters, and sorting.
  • My Items — Maps you have published.
SortOrder
PopularHighest-rated maps first
NewestMost recently published first
TrendingMaps gaining attention recently first

While results are loading, the tab and sort buttons can't be pressed. Switch after the results appear.

Filtering by Tag

Open "Tags ▼", choose tags, and press "Search". Choosing several tags within the same category finds maps that match any of them; choosing across different categories finds maps that match all of them. The list of tags is in Tags.

Unsubscribing and Viewing the Steam Page

  • "Unsubscribe" — Cancels your subscription. The map also disappears from the line selection list.
  • "Page" — Opens the map's Steam page. Rate, comment on, or report it there.

🚄 Playing Subscribed Maps

Subscribed maps appear under "Your maps / subscribed maps" in line selection, marked with [Workshop]. Once selected, you can play them just like maps you made yourself.

  • Timetables made by the author appear under "Official Timetables" on the timetable selection screen. You can play them as they are.
  • You can also make your own timetables. In "Timetable Builder", either create a new one or duplicate and edit one of the author's timetables. You can't modify the author's timetables themselves.
  • You can't edit the tracks or stations of subscribed maps (they don't appear in "Open..." in the map editor). You can't duplicate them either.
Your own timetables are saved in a different place from the subscribed map. Even if the author updates the map or you unsubscribe, your timetable files are not deleted.
Maps you published yourself don't appear in line selection as [Workshop] even if you subscribe to them. You already have the same map locally, so use that one (your own map).

⚠️ When an Author Updates a Map

When an author fixes a map and publishes it again, Steam automatically downloads the new content. Subscribers don't need to do anything special. If a new version arrives while you have that map open, the notification log tells you. While it is open, you continue with the current version; reopening the map switches to the new version.

However, timetables you made yourself were built for the old map. If the update removes or rebuilds stations or tracks, those timetables keep pointing to places that no longer exist.

  • On the timetable selection screen, the timetable gets a red [Needs repair] label. You can still select it.
  • Open it in "Timetable Builder", and the notification log and the warning list show which part of which train no longer matches (for example, "Calling point X is not in the map"). Fix the calling points or paths of those trains, and you can play it again.
  • If you play without fixing it, only those trains run strangely (for example, they appear to jump across sections where the track is cut).
Timetables bundled by the author are updated along with the map if the author fixes them and publishes again.

📤 Publishing Your Map

Publishing is done from the map editor screen. One item = one map + all timetables made on that map.

  1. In the map editor, open the map you want to publish.
  2. Choose "File ▾" → "Publish to Workshop...".
  3. Write a description. The line name is used as the title as is (to change it, use "Line Settings...").
  4. Check "Timetables published with it".
  5. Choose tags (Tags).
  6. Read the publishing guidelines and check "I agree to the guidelines above" (Publishing Guidelines).
  7. Press "Save and check → Publish". The map is saved and the pre-publish check runs.
  8. When the upload finishes, "Published" appears. You can view the Steam page with "Open Workshop page".
All timetables on this map are published. Delete any timetables you don't want to publish beforehand: select them in the "Timetable Builder" list on the title screen and press Delete. You can publish even with no timetables at all (publishing only the map, so players make their own timetables).
Items are published publicly. They appear in search and in "All Items", and anyone can subscribe. To change the visibility, change it on the Steam page after publishing.
When you publish for the first time, you need to agree to the Steam Workshop terms of service. Until you agree, your item isn't visible to others. When prompted, agree on the Steam page that opens.
The thumbnail is captured automatically from the map editor screen each time you save the map. You don't need to prepare one.

🏷️ Tags

Tags are chosen from fixed options (there is no free input). Signaling system and Through service are added automatically from the map's content, so you don't need to choose them.

CategoryHow chosenTags
Signaling systemAutomaticWayside signals / ATC (the signaling system in Line Settings)
Through serviceAutomaticThrough service off the map (when there are portals)
TracksAny numberSingle track / Double track / Quadruple track
FeaturesAny numberSubway / Commuter line / Tourist railway / Shinkansen / Branch lines / Passing loops
TimetableAny numberWeekday timetable / Holiday timetable

On the Steam page (web), tags are shown in English. In the game, they are shown in the game's display language.

✅ Pre-publish Check

When you press "Save and check → Publish", the map is saved and then its content is checked. If nothing is wrong, it is uploaded right away; otherwise, a list appears.

TypeCan you publish?Examples
Error You can't publish until it is fixed Line name is empty / there are no stations / the to-do list has errors
Warning You can publish with "Publish anyway" To-do items remain / a timetable points to stations or tracks not in the map ([Needs repair] on players' screens) / the description is empty
You can publish even with warnings, but we recommend fixing the to-do items (File ▾ → To-do...) and [Needs repair] timetables before publishing. That way, players won't run into trouble.

🔁 Updating or Removing an Item

Updating

After fixing a published map, run "Publish to Workshop..." again from the same map. Instead of adding a new item, the same item is updated (the button becomes "Save and check → Update"). Steam automatically delivers the new content to subscribers.

Fix the stations and tracks of a published map in place; don't delete and rebuild them. If you delete and rebuild them, the internal numbers change even if they look the same, and subscribers' timetables become [Needs repair]. In-place fixes such as renaming a station, extending a track, or redrawing a route don't affect them.

Removing

To remove an item, delete it from its Steam page. You can open the page with "Open Workshop page" on the publishing screen, or with "Page" in the Workshop browser.

⭐ Rating, Comments, and Reports

Rating, comments, and reports use Steam's system. Press a map's "Page" in the Workshop browser to open that map's Steam page.

  • Rating — Rating maps you liked is reflected in the "Popular" and "Trending" sort orders.
  • Comments — Share your impressions and anything you noticed with the author.
  • Reports — If you find content that violates the guidelines, you can report it.

📜 Publishing Guidelines

When publishing, you must agree to the following.

  • You may only publish maps and timetables you made yourself.
  • When publishing, take great care not to infringe the rights to others' copyrighted works (train icons, etc.).
  • We accept no responsibility whatsoever for any damage arising from published content.
The developer does not review or support the content of published maps and timetables. The developer accepts no responsibility for any trouble arising from maps you publish or subscribe to.

❓ Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to check
"Workshop is unavailable because Steam isn't running or you aren't logged in" appears Start Steam, log in, and restart the game.
After subscribing, the status stays at "Downloading..." Quit Steam and start it again (Windows: right-click the Steam icon at the bottom right of the screen → "Exit"; Mac: "Steam" in the menu bar → "Quit Steam"). Then restart the game, and the download will proceed.
A subscribed map doesn't appear in line selection Check in the Workshop browser that it shows "Subscribed (downloaded)", then close the browser and reopen line selection. Maps you published yourself don't appear as [Workshop] even if you subscribe (use your own map instead).
A subscribed map can't be selected, and "Update the app to play it" appears The map was made with a newer version of the game. Update the game to the latest version.
My timetable got a [Needs repair] label The author updated the map. You can fix it by following When an Author Updates a Map.
My item doesn't show up in "All Items" after publishing It may take a little while for Steam to reflect it. It shows up in the "My Items" tab right away. For your first item, it isn't public until you agree to the Steam Workshop terms of service.
"Save and check → Publish" can't be pressed Check that "I agree to the guidelines above" is checked and that Steam is running.
